Actor Nicolas Cage arrested in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS - Actor Nicolas Cage was arrested after he got drunk in the city's French Quarter and argued in the street with his wife over whether a house they were in front of was theirs, police said Saturday.
The couple was in front of a home that Cage insisted they were renting, police said. When she said it wasn't theirs, Cage grabbed her arm, according to a police news release.
Cage started hitting vehicles and tried to get into a taxi, police said. An officer saw that Cage was drunk and told him to get out of the cab. Cage then started yelling at the officer.
The actor has been booked on charges of domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace and public drunkenness. He was released on $11,000 bond Saturday.
Representatives for Cage could not immediately be reached Saturday.
Cage has been a frequent visitor to New Orleans, where he has owned property and shot movies. He has also had financial troubles, despite being one of the highest-paid stars in Hollywood.
He had been behind on taxes and has said he's had to sell numerous assets because of his finances. He sued his former business manager in October 2009 for $20 million, claiming the man's advice led him to financial ruin.
Cage won an Academy Award for his performance in 1995's "Leaving Las Vegas.

U2's Most Successful Tour of All Time
As projected by Billboard last week, U2's 360 officially became the most successful tour of all time, Live Nation announced today.
Sunday night's sold-out show at Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo pulled U2 past the previous record, held by the Rolling Stones' Bigger Bang tour, which grossed $554 million from 2005 through 2007.
Video: U2 performs in Sao Paulo, Brazil
With 26 shows left before the tour finishes in Canada on July 30, 360 will also set a new record as the top grossing tour of all time, with final ticket sales due to surpass $700 million.
U2 to Snatch 'Biggest Tour Ever' Title
Tour promoter/producer Arthur Fogel said, "These numbers are staggering, a fantastic result. U2 have invented a new style of rock show and they continue to deliver their fans the best possible live experience. An in-the-round transportable stadium production is something that the touring industry has been trying to figure out for some time. The extra capacity that the U2 360 creates also allows for a large number, several thousand in fact, of low priced tickets at every show."
U2 manager Paul McGuinness said, "That dollar figure for the gross looks enormous! Of course I can't tell you what the net is, but I can tell you that the band spend enormous sums on production for their audience. Fans all over the world agree that a ticket to U2 '360' is good value for money. We're really proud of this tour and this achievement is great news, coming as we head back into North America."
Britney Spears and Rihanna Teamed Up For S&M Remix
Britney Spears and Rihanna have teamed up for a raunchy remix of the latter's hit single, "S&M." The collaboration, which premiered today on New York radio station Z100, features the pop divas trading lines from the song's original chorus and an entirely new second verse by Spears.
"If I'm bad, tie me down," Spears coos, taking a cue from Rihanna's just-as-provocative original version of the song. "Shut me up, gag and bound me/'Cause the pain is my pleasure/Nothing comes better."
The "S&M" remix comes at a time when both Spears and Rihanna are riding high: Spears' new album"Femme Fatale" just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while Rihanna's original "S&M," which is perched at No. 2 on the Hot 100, just became her record-setting fifth consecutive No. 1 on Radio Songs (and eighth overall).
Spears and Rihanna acknowledged each other's hot streaks on Twitter just hours before the "S&M" remix dropped, with Rihanna telling Spears that she is "one of the biggest worldwide popstars! U gangsta #EPIC." Replied Spears, "You ain't so bad yourself honey."

What Does Angelina Jolie's New Tattoo Mean?
If you know every detail of Angelina Jolie's body, then you know that she has a series of coordinates tattooed on her upper left arm. The coordinates supposedly correspond to the birthplaces of her children. She started with four that pointed to Cambodia, Ethiopia, Namibia and Vietnam. Up until a few days ago she had six and now she has seven.
The latest tattoo has sparked a round of speculation about whether another child is joining the Jolie-Pitt brood. That seems like a pretty logical assumption since the coordinates point to Algeria and Brad and Angelina need an Arab baby to complete their child-version of the U.N. But let's not jump to any conclusions. That's clearly not the only possible meaning of the tattoo. Angelina is an eccentric; that tattoo could mean anything. Here are a few options that are still in the running:
+ It's the seventh clue in a series of clues that lead to a treasure chest full of vials of her blood.
+ It's where Brad parked the car the last time the family went to Disneyland.
+ It doesn't commemorate the birthplace of the child, it commemorates the place where a different family lost its child.
+ Like the other coordinate tattoos, it points to Angelina's favorite street food cart in each country.
+ Like the other coordinate tattoos, it points to a country that will one day be ruled by a Jolie-Pitt child and therefore join a worldwide alliance of nations ruled by Queen Angelina.
Any other ideas? Or do you think it's just another baby (BOR-ING)?
2012 Shelby GT500
800-horsepower Mustang on the way
The 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be available with an upgrade kit enabling it to produce 800 horsepower.
NEW YORK -- An 800-horsepower version of the Ford Mustang will be unveiled at the New York Auto Show later this month.
The 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be built by Shelby American Inc., a Las Vegas-based performance car company. Shelby works with Ford Motor Co. to create various high-performance versions of the iconic Mustang. While the base Super Snake will produce a mere 750 horsepower, those who feel the need for more power will be able to add an optional upgrade package that will provide 50 more. Shelby provides no warranty on the engine and transmission, in either case.
The base version of the outgoing 2011 Super Snake produces 630 horsepower, although no-warranty option packages have been available in recent months to push horsepower in those cars up to as much as 800, as well.
The 2012 Super Snake will be legal to drive on public roads on all 50 states, the carmaker promised, and it will cost less than $100,000.
Prices for the 2011 Super Snake start about $80,000 in total, including the separate purchase of a car from Ford -- a factory-produced Shelby GT500 -- and the necessary modifications.
"Shelby American has a rich history at the New York International Auto Show," said John Luft, president of Shelby American. in an announcement. "The very first Shelby car was introduced there in 1962, as well as the 1968 and 2008 Shelby GT500KR and the 2006 Shelby Hertz GT-H."
The original partnership between Ford and Shelby American founder Carroll Shelby, one that resulted in Mustang-based performance cars that can be worth millions of dollars today, ended in 1969. Ford and Shelby entered into a new agreement in 2003 that has produced a new line of Shelby Mustangs, some built by Ford Motor Co. and others built at the Shelby American factory.

The small things save the world:War of the Worlds
It is with more than a little joy that I get to write about War of the Worlds today, the classic and timeless H. G. Wells novel which he penned in 1898. The story centred on a young man trying to survive an alien invasion in London and his journey through a vastly changed landscape in search of his beloved Carrie, while encountering desperate and strange characters along the way.
The story was made more famous on October 30th, 1938 when Orson Welles read an adaptation of the story on American radio. His narration was so compelling that thousands of listeners panicked, thinking that invaders really had landed.
In the 1950’s the book was made into a film but the story was sadly changed for the American audience and the big screen version never captured the intimate essence of Well’s original tale.
I’m not even going to mention the 2006 Spielberg film which starred Tom Cruise, other than to say it was an absolute disgrace of a remake and had virtually nothing to do with the original.
For me the ultimate ‘remake’ or ‘retelling’ of War of the Worlds came in the 1970’s in the shape of Jeff Wayne’s musical version; a fantastic sounding odyssey that took the listener through the quiet and peaceful streets of a London evening and the strange events on Horsell Common in Woking, to the nightmarish, burning streets of a defenceless capital city undergoing the slow and painful transformation of an earthly to an alien place.
Richard Burton provided the voice of the protagonist and his distinctive voice and superb acting skills truly brought the story to life. For a seven year old boy, War of the Worlds was utterly captivating and certainly shaped my own creative writing for years to follow; much to the dismay and joy of many an English teacher.
The Martians were terrifying creatures, all brain and tentacles in their beautifully designed tripod vehicles which strode across the land belching out flaming death rays and levelling the entire world to suit their own needs; a world they turned red like the surface of Mars from which they’d travelled in cylinders propelled by green comets.
Here comes the spoiler for those who have never read, seen or listened to the story.
While the Martians seemed indestructible and completely invulnerable against man’s greatest weapons, they failed to consider the simplest things; tiny organisms which began attacking them the moment they set tentacle upon the earth. While humankind’s greatest achievements and technological advancements failed them, the humblest aspects of creation quietly saved the planet, and perhaps there is a valuable lesson in that message.
Humans believe they are top of the food chain and rulers of the planet, but too often our species is found wanting. We have our place in the world and it is arrogant to think that we can be anything more than the sum of our parts. Nature has a way of dealing with unwanted pests and has historically proven to do so.
As the message on the Georgia Guidestones states: “Be not a cancer upon the earth.”
H. G. Wells was an incredible anthropologist and it is clear that there are warnings in his stories. The simplest message we can draw from this is that we should not tamper with the natural order of things. Nature has developed an intricate system in which everything can live in balanced harmony; it is arrogant of man to think he can mess with that as is being done by companies such as Monsanto.

2011 Ninja ZX™ -10R ABS
Simply Put, the World’s Ultimate Sporting Motorcycle
It’s hard to imagine a more advanced or more capable sportbike than the completely new and totally redesigned Kawasaki Ninja® ZX™-10R. After all, it packs the very latest in sport bike technology, much of it right off the MotoGP circuit, including the most advanced traction-control system in production bike history.
But the ZX-10R has an even smarter sibling – the 2011 Ninja ZX-10R ABS.
At first glance, anti-lock braking might seem a touch out of place on a purebred sportbike. This system was designed from the start to provide maximum on-track performance. And when you consider the many safety- and control-oriented benefits provided by the amazing electronic and hardware technology available today, it begins to make a lot of sense.
Think of it: You’re charging into a hairpin during a track day. It’s late in the afternoon, you’re tired, and your front tire is shagged from a day of hard-core knee-dragging. But instead of tucking as you squeeze the front brake lever, your front tire chirps briefly and the KIBS system intervenes until traction returns – allowing you to arc gracefully into the corner, a little wiser and a lot more intact physically that you might have been riding a non-ABS motorcycle. On the street, anti-lock’s benefits are even easier to realize.
Kawasaki calls its all-new anti-lock system KIBS – or Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System. The use of “intelligent” is apropos, too, considering just how smart the new KIBS is. It all starts with the smallest and lightest ABS unit ever built for a motorcycle, one Bosch designed specifically with sport bikes in mind. It’s nearly 50 percent smaller than current motorcycle ABS units, and 800 grams lighter, adding only about 7 pounds of weight compared to the non-ABS machine, a pound of which is accounted for by the larger battery.
KIBS is a multi-sensing system, one that collects and monitors a wide range of information taken from wheel sensors (the same ones collecting data on the standard ZX-10R for its S-KTRC traction control system) and the bike’s ECU, including wheel speed, caliper pressure, engine rpm, throttle position, clutch actuation and gear position. The KIBS’s ECU actually communicates with the bike’s engine ECU and crunches the numbers, and when it notes a potential lock-up situation, it tells the Bosch unit to release caliper pressure, allowing the wheel to once again regain traction.
Aside from this system’s ultra-fast response time, it offers a number of additional sport-riding and race track benefits, including rear-end lift suppression during hard braking, minimal kickback during ABS intervention, and increased rear brake control during downshifts. The high-precision pressure control enables the system to avoid reduced brake performance (sometimes seen on less advanced systems), maintain proper lever feel and help ensure the ABS pulses are minimized.
The rest of the 2011 Ninja ZX-10R ABS is equally advanced. Not only are we talking about a complete redesign of the Big Ninja’s engine, frame, suspension, bodywork, instrumentation and wheels, but a highly advanced and customizable electronic system that allows riders of all skill levels to harness and experience the new ZX-10R ABS’s amazing blend of power and razor-edge handling. The system – called Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control, or S-KTRC – represents a whole new dimension in sport motorcycling, and the ZX-10R ABS is the only production sport bike that can take you there.
Motorcyclists have forever been challenged by traction-related issues, whether on dirt, street or track. Riders that can keep a rear tire from spinning excessively or sliding unpredictably are both faster and safer, a tough combination to beat on the racetrack. And when talking about the absolute leading edge of open-class sport bike technology, where production street bikes are actually more capable than full-on race bikes from just a couple years ago, more consistent traction and enhanced confidence is a major plus.
The MotoGP-derived S-KTRC system works by crunching numbers from a variety of parameters and sensors – wheel speed and slip, engine rpm, throttle position, acceleration, etc. There’s more data gathering and analysis going on here than on any other Kawasaki in history, and it’s all in the name of helping racers inch closer to the elusive “edge” of maximum traction than ever before. The S-KTRC system relies on complex software buried in the new ZX-10R’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU), the only additional hardware is the lightweight speed sensors located on each wheel.
Unlike the KTRC system on Kawasaki’s Concours™ 14 ABS sport tourer, which primarily minimizes wheel slip on slick or broken surfaces as a safety feature, the S-KTRC system is designed to maximize performance by using complex analysis to predict when traction conditions are about to become unfavorable. By quickly, but subtly reducing power just before the amount of slippage exceeds the optimal traction zone, the system – which processes every data point 200 times per second – maintains the optimum level of tire grip to maximize forward motion. The result is significantly better lap times and enhanced rider confidence –exactly what one needs when piloting a machine of this caliber.
The S-KTRC system offers three different modes of operation, which riders can select according to surface conditions, rider preference and skill level: Level 1 for max-grip track use, Level 2 for intermediate use, and Level 3 for slippery conditions. An LCD graph in the newly designed instrument cluster displays how much electronic intervention is occurring in real time and a thumb switch on the left handlebar pod allows simple, on-the-go mode changes.
The system also incorporates an advanced Power Mode system that allows riders to choose the amount of power – and the character of delivery – available from the engine. Besides the standard full-power mode are Medium and Low settings. In Medium mode, performance varies according to throttle position and engine rpm; at anything less than 50 percent throttle opening, performance is essentially the same as in Low mode; at more than 50 percent, riders can access additional engine performance. All three S-KTRC settings are available in each of the three Power Mode settings.
And the motorcycle so capably managed by all of this trick electronic wizardry? It was completely redesigned from 2010 to ’11.
It all starts with the ZX-10R ABS’s all-new inline-four, easily the most advanced engine to ever emerge from a Kawasaki factory. Like last year’s potent ZX-10R engine, the new powerplant is a 16-valve, DOHC, liquid-cooled inline-four displacing 998cc via 76 x 55mm bore and stroke dimensions. But that’s where the similarity stops, as the new mill boasts a handful of engineering changes designed to optimize power, power delivery, center of gravity and actual engine placement within the chassis.
A primary goal of Kawasaki engineers was linear power delivery and engine manageability throughout all elements of a corner: the entry, getting back to neutral throttle at mid-corner, and heady, controllable acceleration at the exit. Peak torque was moved to a higher rpm range, which helped to smooth the power peaks and valleys that can make it difficult for racers and track day riders to open the throttle with confidence.
Larger intake valves (31mm vs. 30mm), wider – and polished – intake ports, and completely revised exhaust porting all allow better breathing, more controllable power delivery and less engine braking, just the thing to smooth those racetrack corner entries and exits. Higher-lift camshafts built from lighter-yet-stronger chromoly steel (instead of cast iron on the previous model) and featuring revised overlap further contribute to optimized engine braking and more controllable power delivery. Newly designed lightweight pistons feature shorter skirts and mount to lighter and stronger connecting rods, each of which spin a revised crankshaft made of a harder material and featuring stronger pins and journal fillets. Compression moves to a full 13.0:1.
There’s more, including a totally revamped crankshaft/transmission shaft layout that contributes to a higher center of mass – and improved handling via better mass centralization – by locating the crankshaft approximately 10 degrees higher relative to the output shaft. There’s even a secondary engine balancer assembly this year, which allows a number of vibration-damping parts to be simplified, contributing to weight savings. A smaller and dramatically lighter battery helps drop even more weight, as does a lighter ECU and fuel pump.
A race-style cassette transmission allows simple trackside ratio changes and offers a host of improvements for 2011. These include closer spacing for 4th, 5th and 6th gears and the fine tuning of the primary and final reduction ratios for less squat/lift during acceleration and deceleration, which allows more precise suspension tuning in back. An adjustable back-torque limiting clutch assembly is fitted, helps reduce driveline shock during downshifts and offers an even higher level of corner-entry calmness.
Cramming all that fuel and air into this amazing new engine is a ram air-assisted fuel injection system featuring larger throttle bodies (47 vs. 43mm) and sub-throttle valves, a larger capacity airbox (9 vs. 8 liters), secondary injectors that improve top-end power characteristics, and a redesigned ram-air intake that’s positioned closer to the front of the bike for more efficient airbox filling and increased power.
The final piece of the ZX-10R ABS’s power-production formula is a race-spec exhaust system featuring a titanium header assembly, hydroformed collectors, a large-volume pre-chamber containing two catalyzers and a highly compact silencer. Due to the header’s race-spec design, riders and racers looking for more closed-course performance need only replace the muffler assembly.
With the engine producing a massive quantity of usable and controllable power, engineers looked to the chassis to help refine handling and overall road/track competency even further. An all-new aluminum twin-spar frame was designed, an all-cast assemblage of just seven pieces that features optimized flex characteristics for ideal rider feedback, cornering performance and lighter weight than last year’s cage. Fewer pieces mean fewer welds, which contributes to a cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing look. Like the frame, the new alloy swingarm is an all-cast assembly, with idealized rigidity matching that of the frame itself.
Chassis geometry was juggled to offer the best possible stability and handling quickness. Rake, at 25 degrees, is a half-degree steeper than on the 2010 machine, while trail has been reduced from 110 to 107mm. This slightly more radical front end geometry, and the quicker, lighter handling it allows, was made possible largely from the new engine’s more controllable power, engine placement and the CG differences it generated, and the frame and swingarm’s newfound flex characteristics.
Highly advanced suspension at both ends helped as well. Up front is a 43mm open-class version of the Big Piston Fork (BPF) found on last year’s comparo-dominating Ninja ZX-6R. Featuring a piston design nearly twice the size of a conventional cartridge fork, the BPF offers smoother action, less stiction, lighter overall weight and enhanced damping performance on the compression and rebound circuits. This added compliance results in more control and feedback for the rider – just what you need when carving through a rippled sweeper at your local track or negotiating a decreasing-radius corner on your favorite backroad.
There’s big suspension news in back, too. Replacing the vertical Uni-Trak® system of the 2010 ZX-10R is a Horizontal Back-link suspension design that positions the shock and linkage above the swingarm. Benefits include better mass centralization, improved road holding, compliance and stability, smoother action in the mid-stroke (even with firmer settings), better overall feedback and cooler running. The design also frees space previously taken by the linkage assembly below the swingarm, space now used for the exhaust pre-chamber, which allows a shorter muffler and, again, better mass centralization. The fully adjustable shock itself features a piggyback reservoir and dual-range (low- and high-speed) compression damping.
All-new gravity-cast three-spoke wheels are significantly lighter than the hoops fitted to the 2010 bike, and combine with the very latest in brake technology – Tokico radial-mount calipers grasping 310mm petal discs up front and a 220mm disc and lightweight single-piston caliper in back. The result is powerful stops with plenty of rider feedback and the added confidence of the KIBS ABS system.
Finally, Kawasaki engineers wrapped all this new technology in bodywork as advanced and stylish as anything on this side of a MotoGP grid. Shapes are more curved than edged this year, and the contrasting colored and black parts create a sharp, aggressive image. Line-beam headlights enable the fairing to be made shorter, while LED turn signals are integrated into the mirror assemblies. Convenient turn-signal couplers allow easy mirror removal for track-day use, while the rear fender assembly holding the rear signal stalks and license plate frame is also easily removable for track days. High-visibility LED lamps are also used for the tail and position lights.
Instrumentation is totally new as well; the unit highlighted by an LED-backlit bar-graph tachometer set above a multi-featured LCD info screen with numerous sections and data panels. A wide range of information is presented, including odometer, dual trip meters, vehicle speed, fuel consumption, Power Mode and S-KTRC level indicators, low fuel, water temperature and much more. For track use, the LCD display can be set to “race” mode which moves the gear display to the center of the screen.
The new ZX-10R ABS’s ergonomics have been fine tuned for optimum comfort and control, with a slightly lower saddle, adjustable footpegs positioned slightly lower and forward relative to last year, and clip-ons with a bit less downward angle. This is a hard-core sportbike you can actually take on a weekend ride – and be reasonably comfortable doing so. And because it’s more than 10 pounds lighter than last year’s bike, the new ZX-10R ABS will be much more manageable in whatever environment you choose to ride it in.
The old saying, “power is nothing without control” is certainly apt where open-class sport bikes are concerned. But when you factor in all the engine, chassis, ergonomic and anti-lock braking control designed into the 2011 Ninja ZX-10R ABS, you begin to realize you’re looking at one very special motorcycle – one that will prove to you time and time again why it’s arguably the most advanced sportbike ever.
LeBron James' mother arrested
LeBron James' mother, Gloria James, was arrested early Thursday morning on assault charges after she allegedly became physical with a valet worker, and there's really nothing good that can come from this once you learn that witnesses have described James as having the strong odor of alcohol on her breath.
It's really hard to pass too much judgment this early in the game, but initial reports aren't promising. Witnesses say the valet worker wasn't fetching James' car quickly enough for her tastes, and that she went after him.
Police said Gloria James had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and her eyes were bloodshot when officers arrived at the hotel about 4:47 a.m. Thursday.
Police said several witnesses supported valet worker Sorel Rockfeller's account of the alleged assault.
If James' mother had just acted the part of the angry valet customer, sure, we could go funny with this. But alleged alcohol on her breath, the time of night it was, and James' previous DUI conviction in 2006? This all adds up to a bad situation for all involved.
All except people driving in Miami Beach at around 5 a.m. on Thursday, allegedly. Because James may have just saved some lives by having it out with the valet service.
TMZ.com is quoting the police report, which paints a pretty ugly picture:
The cop says the valet explained that he retrieved James' car and put it on the valet ramp in front of the hotel while Gloria and a female driver stood around talking to people for 30 minutes. Finally, the valet says he turned the car off.
The valet says Gloria then approached him and stated, "Where are my [expletive] keys and continued yelling profanities at the victim."
The report explains, "Then for no apparent reason the arrestee struck the victim with an open had [sic] across the right side of his face and in the process causing herself to lose her balance and falling to the ground."
After Gloria was transported to a nearby police station, the report continues, a shift commander -- Lt. Acosta -- tried to speak with James who responded, "I'm trying to trust you but I don't trust your kind ... I don't trust that officer who arrested me."
LeBron James' Heat played in Miami on Wednesday night, losing to the Milwaukee Bucks by a 90-85 score. His team is currently sitting third in the Eastern Conference with a 54-24 record, three-and-a-half games behind the Chicago Bulls for the best conference record, and a half-game behind the Boston Celtics for second in the East.
LeBron James to hold minority interest in Liverpool Football Club
Over the past two decades, soccer has become increasingly popular in the United States. Beginning with the 1994 World Cup, American sports fans have steadily come to understand that players are full of engaging style even if there aren't a ton of goals, and that a draw can be just as exciting as a victory. These days, there are enough casual soccer fans that a mid-week broadcast of a Champions League match or a big weekend game between two English Premier League clubs can get a pretty solid TV rating in this country.
In fact, the sport is popular enough here that an athlete investing in a successful soccer club can be seen as a pretty intelligent business decision rather than some questionable entrance into foreign enterprise. So it should not be a terrible surprise that Miami Heat star LeBron James(notes) now owns part of the legendary Liverpool Football Club. From Matthew Futterman for the Wall Street Journal:
The deal between Mr. James and Fenway Sports Group will give Mr. James a minority stake in the soccer club Liverpool, which FSG owns. FSG, which also owns the Boston Red Sox, is partnering with Mr. James's sports-marketing firm, LRMR Branding & Marketing to become the exclusive world-wide representative for Mr. James.
The deal marks the first time that a professional athlete at the top of his game has taken an ownership interest in a team with the size and reach of Liverpool, which is one of the most popular and powerful sports franchises in the world.
It also adds yet another dimension for Boston-based FSG, which became a global operation last October when it bought Liverpool for $488 million. The company was founded as New England Sports Ventures nine years ago after Messrs. Henry and Werner bought the Red Sox and 80% of regional sports channel New England Sports Network. In 2007 Fenway became 50% owner of the Nascar auto-racing team Roush Fenway Racing.
LeBron has said for years that he wants to become a global icon on the order of Michael Jordan. And while reaching that level of fame will probably always depend most on whether or not he becomes an NBA champion several times over, business decisions like this one (and, in a more minor sense, the web cartoon series he premiered Wednesday) position him to reach out to an unprecedented number of fans. In return, he will likely help give Liverpool a larger profile among budding fans of European football in America.
Along with Manchester United, Liverpool is historically the most successful soccer team in the United Kingdom, earning 18 championships at the top level of English football and five European Cup trophies. They've fallen on relatively hard times over the past few seasons, but they are an established brand with worldwide recognition. It's extremely unlikely that LeBron will have any say in the club's policy or day-to-day operations, but, as far as marketing ploys go, this is a smart one.
LeBron's detractors are sure to wonder if continual marketing moves such as this one are distracting LeBron from gaining the competitive spark needed to become the best player on a team that wins multiple championships. These concerns are not without merit, but they'll also continue to follow James around until he reaches that achievement. If that day ever comes, LeBron will want to be well positioned to become the most famous athlete the world has ever seen. This relationship with Liverpool gets him closer to that goal. Taken on its own merits, it's a great decision.

Snooki's Impressive Moves at Wrestlemania
Well, this is a surprise! Appearing a whole lot more comfortable than she did during her last WWE appearance, Snooki pulled off a legitimately impressive series of flips at Wrestlemania last night. We must admit: the girl's got some skills.
The "Jersey Shore" star's calisthenic prowess may come as a surprise, but it turns out Snooki actually has a fair amount of training.
Snooki reportedly took gymnastics from the ages of 3-13, and she would later become cheerleading captain at her high school (Marlboro High School, class of 2006).
She confirmed her cheerleading past on Twitter in March, writing "Been doing cheer all my life! Captain of my squad in highschool & did Open Allstars <3 would love to start up again when I have time!"
Of course, considering her busy schedule as a touring author, slipper entrepreneur and emerging wrestler -- not to mention her upcoming trip to Italy -- who knows when she will ever have time to spare again.

Clijsters out for a month due to injuries
Kim Clijsters will be sidelined for a month with shoulder and wrist injuries, forcing her to miss Belgium’s Fed Cup semifinal next week against the Czech Republic. She is aiming to play the French Open.
The U.S. Open and Australian Open champion said a busy spring schedule overexerted her right shoulder and wrist. She will not be able to hold a tennis racket for the next few weeks.
Clijsters, ranked No. 2, also will skip the Madrid Open in the first week of May but hopes to resume her season on clay in Rome on May 9, giving her two weeks to prepare for the French Open.
“I don’t want to force anything,” she said on her website. “I want to avoid at all cost that this becomes chronic.”
Despite promises to take it easy and limit her tournaments, Clijsters acknowledged she already had taken on too much this year. After winning the year’s first major in Australia, she played Fed Cup and Paris in February before heading to the United States for two long tournaments.
First, she pulled out of Indian Wells in the fourth round with a shoulder injury. Then she lost in the quarterfinals in Miami last week to eventual champion Victoria Azarenka in a strangely listless performance.
Even then, the signs were already there.
“I felt something was not quite right,” Clijsters said. “There were too many successive aches and pains that just didn’t want to disappear. It gets into your head.”
The injury is a blow to Belgium, which faces a strong challenge from the Czech Republic at home in Charleroi next week. Early in the season, Justine Henin was forced into retirement because of injury. So instead of featuring two of the game’s greatest players, Belgium will be relying on No. 23 Yanina Wickmayer and No. 103 Kirsten Flipkens.
“I was really looking forward to that Fed Cup,” Clijsters said.
Instead, the French Open awaits. She was twice a losing finalist at Roland Garros and was forced to miss it last year. Clijsters is 27 and at one point took a 2 1/2 -year break from tennis to start a family. She still wants to shine at the Olympics in London next year before letting the pull of family take over again.
SDSU's Long grateful for another top job
Rocky Long never anticipated receiving another head-coaching opportunity, though just about everyone else at San Diego State considered it inevitable.
San Diego State didn't have to search farther than its own athletic office to find its new coach after Michigan hired away Brady Hoke. The Aztecs selected Long as Hoke's successor so soon that the men held their introductory news conferences on the same day.
"An opportunity that was too good to pass up happened here," says Long, a former New Mexico coach who spent the past two seasons as the Aztecs' defensive coordinator. "It was a very big surprise to me that it happened. I was very content being an assistant coach, but the chance to be a head coach in a program that can be better and better, it's so exciting."
Long, 61, may have been the only person surprised by the news. As Hoke led San Diego State to its first bowl bid in 12 years last season, he emerged as one of the hottest contenders for coaching vacancies across the country. San Diego State's players heard the rumors and occasionally discussed ideal replacement candidates.
"It was kind of unanimous," San Diego State quarterback Ryan Lindley says. "We decided that if [Hoke] were to go, we wanted Coach Long to step in."
San Diego State athletic director Jim Sterk felt the same way, but he wondered whether Long wanted to return to the daily grind that comes with a head-coaching position. When Long stepped down as New Mexico's coach at the end of the 2008 season, he didn't seem interested in being a head coach again anytime soon.
"I want this program to be on top," Long told reporters at the time. "I wanted it to be on top as a player. I wanted it to be on top as an assistant coach. And I wanted it to be on top as the head coach. I don't see it happening with me as the head coach."
Although Long doesn't like to talk publicly about the circumstances behind his departure from New Mexico anymore, Sterk said he discussed the issue with him last fall. Sterk understood that he might need to find a replacement for Hoke soon, and he wanted to gauge Long's interest. During that conversation, Sterk discovered that Long's passion to be a head coach had returned. Long truly believed he could help San Diego State continue its recent momentum.
The long and short of it
San Diego State coach Rocky Long plans to continue using the 3-3-5 defense that he employed in his two seasons as the Aztecs' defensive coordinator. Here's a look at how San Diego State's defense fared in his two years as coordinator and in the two years before his arrival. NCAA rankings are in parentheses.
BEFORE LONG Yards allowed Points allowed
2007 498.2 (115th) 34.4 (103rd)
2008 460.8 (113th) 37.2 (113th)
WITH LONG Yards allowed Points allowed
2009 382.0 (74th) 30.5 (98th)
2010 353.8 (43rd) 322.1 (36th)
"That was one of the things we discussed: 'Why did you step away?' " Sterk says. "[I liked] the answers that he gave, the passion that he expressed. He made the comment that we can be the TCU of this league. We can go to a BCS game. We can go to bowls and a BCS game. And that he wanted to coach the next 10 years here if all goes well and if he feels good."
Long is treating San Diego State as a destination rather than a steppingstone. He's grateful for an opportunity that he didn't really expect.
"When I left New Mexico, I didn't think I wanted to be a head coach again," Long says. "Time heals all wounds. ? I'd never thought about being a head coach again, but as soon as the opportunity arose that I could be a head coach again, it came back into my system really fast."
Long takes over San Diego State's program at a critical time. The Mountain West Conference is in a state of transition. The conference welcomes Boise State this season while losing BYU and Utah. TCU departs for the Big East next year, while Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada arrive from the Western Athletic Conference.
The absence of BYU and Utah and the impending departure of TCU will leave the MWC without its three traditional heavyweights. Someone has to emerge as Boise State's top conference rival. Why not San Diego State?
San Diego State returns Lindley, 2010 MWC rushing leader Ronnie Hillman and five other offensive players who made at least seven starts for a team that went 9-4 and beat Navy 35-14 in the Poinsettia Bowl last season. The Aztecs certainly have reason for optimism.
Long has preached caution by pointing out that one good season doesn't necessarily signal that the entire program has turned the corner. San Diego State's 9-4 mark last season was its first winning record since 1998.
"We have different players, different coaches," Long said. "It takes you about five years to establish a program. This program hasn't been established, even though we had a good year last year."
Long has demonstrated he knows how to establish a program. New Mexico had posted three winning seasons in the 15 years before Long took over as coach. The Lobos went 65-69 in Long's 11-season tenure and reached a bowl in five of his final seven seasons.
The Lobos were 9-4 and won the New Mexico Bowl in 2007 for their first postseason victory in 46 years before staggering to a 4-8 finish in 2008 that led to Long's departure. Even in that disappointing final season at New Mexico, Long led the Lobos to a 70-7 demolition of San Diego State.
That shellacking helped Long garner the immediate respect of San Diego State's players as soon as he joined Hoke's staff in 2009.
"He's a real personable guy," Lindley says. "He's a guy you get along with really well. At the same time, he's still the authority figure. If you screw up, regardless of who it is -- the third-year starting left tackle or a redshirt freshman -- he's going to get in your ear. That's something you need. He's going to push you to be the best player and best person you can be."
San Diego State safeties coach Danny Gonzales played for Long and coached alongside him at New Mexico, working his way up from a graduate assistant to a full-time staff member coaching safeties, punters, kickers and long snappers. Gonzales believes Long has the same enthusiasm he possessed during his most productive years with the Lobos.
"He's really excited to have another opportunity to be a head coach," Gonzales says. "He's energized. He worked his tail off to build what we built at New Mexico. That fire in his eyes is great to see. He's willing to try to do it again."
Long may be coaching with a similar style, but he's not the same guy who helped rebuild New Mexico's program. Long believes he benefited from his two years working for Hoke. Long now might be poised to deliver better results than he ever produced at New Mexico because he inherits a program that's in better shape and because the past two years have made him a better coach.
"I think people are excited about the program and excited about the success we've had, but people have to be realistic," Long says. "We anticipate continuing that success, but with the change in players and a change in staffs, there's always a learning curve.
"Hopefully with continuity, we can go right past that learning curve and continue on with more success."
10 Dirtiest Scandals On Boxing
1) The Resto-Collins Fight
On June 16th, 1983, light-hitting club fighter, Luis Resto beat 22-year old undefeated prospect, "Irish" Billy Collins to a bloody pulp in Madison Square Garden. In the 10-round unanimous decision loss, Collins would suffer two completely swollen eyes, a torn iris, and permanently blurred vision which ended the young fighter's career. At the end of the contest, Collins' team noticed that Resto's gloves looked thinner than normal and insisted that the commission immediately seize them. An investigation by the New York State Athletic Commission determined that Resto's trainer, Panama Lewis, had removed some of the padding from each glove. Resto and Lewis were permanently banned from boxing in the US and, following a court trial, were also convicted of assault, conspiracy, and criminal possession of a deadly weapon— the fists of Resto. Both would serve 2.5 years in Prison. In 2007, Resto would also confess to having his hand wraps soaked in plaster of Paris prior to the contest to add punching power. Billy Collins would never fight again. Drifting into alcoholism and depression, Collins would die in a car crash less than a year after the controversial bout. Many feel, including Collins' own family, that the crash was, actually, a suicide.
2) The Ring Magazine Scandal
Don King's "United States Boxing Championships" kicked off in early 1977 and was promoted as a tournament to name America's best fighters in each division. Funded by ABC Television and supported by Ring Magazine, King would leverage the ABC money and exposure into an attempted power grab to sign the country's best talent to exclusive contracts. Ring Magazine, running interference for King, would falsify records and inflate the rankings of at least eleven fighters in order to gain entry into the tournament. Underground boxing scribe, Malcolm "Flash" Gordon and ABC associate producer, Alex Wallau, uncovered the shady dealings and encouraged the network to cancel the entire deal. Ring Magazine would clean house after the scandal and two of Don King's associates would be sanctioned for their roles in the scandal. Don King, however, would suffer no official discipline.
3) Don King
King is a living, breathing scandal. From his manslaughter conviction in 1967 right through to his grasp on boxing as the sport's most powerful promoter, the native of Cleveland has been a part of some of boxing's biggest events as well as some of its greatest scandals. King has been the subject of FBI probes and Senate investigations, but has always remained ahead of the game. The promoter has also been sued by many of his former clients, including Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Tim Witherspoon, Terry Norris, and Chris Byrd.
4) Jack Johnson's Conviction
Johnson, known as the "Galveston Giant" was the first African American heavyweight champion of the world and, also, victim of the suffocating racism in the first part of the twentieth century. A flamboyant and brash man about town, Johnson enraged many with fancy cars, clothes, and his several interracial relationships. He would eventually be arrested and charged with violation of the Mann Act, which sanctioned against "transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes." An all-white jury found Johnson guilty and sentenced him to just over a year in prison, despite the fact that he was charged with acts that took place before the Mann Act was in place. After seven years in exile abroad to avoid the prison sentence, Johnson would eventually turn himself in to Federal agents at the Mexican border.
5) Robert Lee, The IBF, and the Racketeering Scandal of 1999
After a multi-year probe by the FBI, Robert Lee, president and founder of the International Boxing Federation (IBF) would be found guilty of six counts of money laundering and tax evasion, but would somehow avoid the more serious charges of racketeering. According to the FBI, Lee had established a long history of bribes and extortion related to title shots and rankings. In this same case, promoter, Bob Arum turned state's evidence, testifying that he arranged to pay Lee $100,000 to sanction a title defense for George Foreman against Axel Schultz instead of Foreman's number one contender. Promoters Cedric Kushner and Dino Duva also testified that they paid bribes to rig rankings for their fighters. Lee was sentenced to twenty-two months in prison, ordered to pay a $25,000 fine, and issued a lifetime ban from boxing.
6) Antonio Margarito and "Plaster Gate"
In January of 2009, "The Tijuana Tornado," Antonio Margarito was set to take on "Sugar" Shane Mosley at a sold out Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Margarito had just finished delivering a brutal, bloody beating to defending welterweight champ, Miguel Cotto, forcing the usually durable Puerto Rican star to submit in eleven rounds. On the night of the Mosley fight, Mosley's trainer, Naazim Richardon watched carefully as Margarito's hands were being wrapped. He noticed an irregularity in the wrapping and, after consulting with the commission inspector, Margarito was forced to unwrap his hand. As Margarito trainer, Javier Capetillo removed the hand wraps from his fighter, a suspicious knuckle pad became exposed. Instead of the required gauze, this pad was stiff and covered in a "plaster-like" substance. A similar knuckle pad was uncovered on the other hand. Both suspicious items were seized by representatives of the California State Athletic Commission. An independent laboratory analysis would later reveal that both knuckle pads were altered and had been covered with a substance similar to plaster of Paris. Both Margarito and Capetillo would have their licenses revoked indefinitely. Capetillo returned to training, but is currently unable to work the corner of any of his fighters within the US. Margarito was rejected in an appeal to return his license, but would later be granted a license to fight Manny Pacquiao in Texas.
7) The Edwin Valero Murder / Suicide
Reigning lightweight champ, Valero, was at the top of his game and drawing comparisons to all-time greats such as Roberto Duran when the news broke. In a frenzy of alcohol and cocaine paranoia, Valero stabbed his wife to death in a small town hotel in his native Venezuela. In custody, Valero would be found the next morning, hanging from the bars of his jail cell by a make-shift noose that Valero crafted from his own sweat pants.
8) Roy Jones Jr. and the Stolen Gold Medal
Before Roy Jones Jr. became a four-division world champ and a pound-for-pound king, he was a bright amateur star on his way to a sure gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. In a gold medal bout which saw him land 86 punches compared to South Korean, Park Si-Hun's 32, Jones found himself on the losing end of a 3-2 decision. The controversial decision was investigated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and resulted in the suspension of the three judges who voted against Jones. The IOC discovered that the judges in question had been wined and dined by South Korean officials prior to the bout. The Roy Jones decision led to a change in the scoring system for all Olympic and amateur boxing.
9) The Violent Life and Death of Carlos Monzon
Argentina's Monzon was best known for his seven-year reign as undisputed middleweight champion of the world. He was also known to be as volatile and violent outside the ring as he was inside. In 1988, eleven years after officially retiring, he would be arrested and convicted of throwing his long-time lover off a balcony to her death. Monzon was sentenced to eleven years in prison, but died seven years into his sentence when he crashed his car during a weekend furlough.
10) The Arturo Gatti Murder Mystery
In July of 2009, the former world champ and co-winner of four Ring Magazine "Fights of the Year," Gatti, was found hanged in his hotel room in Brazil. With only his wife, Amanda, and 10-month old son present, questions circulated about how such a thing could've happened and why his wife spent ten hours in the hotel room with the deceased Gatti before contacting authorities. Brazilian officials initially ruled the death a homicide and detained Gatti's wife, but later released her when they determined that the death was a suicide. Others are seeking to re-open the case in an attempt to get at the truth, pointing to Gatti's widow and the alleged marital problems they were having.

Player poll rates notorious floppers as NBA’s top floppers
Over the course of the last decade or so, flopping has become an increasingly popular tactic on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. In an important basketball game where every play counts, a few free throws or an offensive foul can be the difference between a win and a loss. Everyone looks for an edge, and flopping is just one way of grabbing one.
Some players flop enough, in fact, that they've gained reputations as the league's top floppers. So, not surprisingly, when Sports Illustrated ran an informal player poll asking for the NBA's biggest floppers, the results rounded up the usual suspects. From SI.com (via PBT), the top 10 (of 15), in order:
1. Anderson Varejao(notes)
2. Manu Ginobili(notes)
3. Luis Scola(notes)
4. Derek Fisher(notes)
5. Kevin Martin(notes)
6. Shane Battier(notes)
7. Jarron Collins(notes)
8. Raja Bell(notes)
9. Jose Barea
10. Andres Nocioni(notes)
Some observers argue that an influx of foreign players steeped in the culture of soccer have made flopping a legitimate tactic in the NBA, but it's interesting to note that, apart from the top three, this list isn't exactly full of foreign players -- in addition to No. 15 Sasha Vujacic(notes), six of the 15 players are foreign-born, and Barea may not count because he is from Puerto Rico and honed his craft over four years of NCAA ball at Northeastern. (Oh, and flopping is just as bemoaned by the foreign soccer press as it is in the NBA.) So, blame Europeans if you want, but it's not as if Derek Fisher learned how to flop his way to charge calls just because he saw Varejao do it once in 2005.
What's most interesting about this list, though, is that with the exception of Barea, a player poll from five years ago would have looked remarkably similar. These players flop, to be sure, but it's not as if no other NBA athletes have stepped up their flop game in the intervening seasons. Varejao and Ginobili earned their spots at the top of the list, yet they would find themselves in that position even if both seriously curtailed their flopping. Once you get a reputation, it's hard to shake it.
Still, the strength of reputations isn't the only thing that explains the lack of new faces on this list. As flopping has become a more common occurrence around the league, it's also become a more accepted part of NBA strategy. Take, for instance, the case of Thunder forward Nick Collison(notes), who's been lauded for his ability to take charges even though, like most NBA players, he surely flops on a good number of them. However, instead of being called a sissy who won't play like a man, Collison has been praised for his toughness. This isn't because he's any tougher than players who take similar amounts of charges -- it's just that Collison had the good fortune of becoming a charge-taking savant when the play was already widespread enough to be seen as a useful move and not the coward's way out of playing defense.
What this means, ultimately, is that Ginobili and Varejao will top lists like this one until they retire, because the league's newest floppers don't stand out much when the tactic becomes a more accepted fact of the NBA game. In fact, when the players on this list retire, it'll be interesting to see if these sorts of polls even exist anymore. It's hard to call out the league's most active floppers when coaches start teaching it as an aspect of proper defensive technique.

NBA: March’s Players Of The Month
March statistics has already been computed and it has revealed that March’s players of the month happened to be Derrick Rose and Kobe Bryant. The two showed exemplary skills for their respective conferences this month.
Rose, who has been the leading in the MVP title for this season was able to set his career high in points (42), assists (17) and free throws made and attempted (18-21) and has contributed that much for the Bulls of having their best record in the East during the month. A lot has been confident that he would definitely make it as MVP this season.
Meanwhile, it is quite expected that Kobe Bryant would also be outshining the rest of the players in West. Los Angeles Lakers was able to have a 12-1 record in March and it happens to be the second in the conference next to San Antonio. He passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most games played in a Lakers uniform and also Moses Malone for sixth on the all-time scoring list.
Both is truly deserved such recognition. Their teams have been thankful that they exist at this point of time wherein winning has been craved by all. The entire NBA community has been looking forward what else can these players show to everyone.

Yankees to stop hand signals after MLB inquiry
NEW YORK —The New York Yankees say they are finished flashing hand signals from the stands—at least for now.
General manager Brian Cashman confirmed that the team received a call Saturday from the commissioner’s office inquiring about a club employee relaying information to players after each pitch on opening day.
The Daily News reported Saturday that broadcaster Keith Olbermann, a New York season-ticket holder, put a photo on Twitter of Brett Weber, a Yankees baseball operations coaching assistant, holding up four fingers toward the field during Thursday’s game against the Detroit Tigers.
Weber was sitting behind home plate and wearing a headset.
Major League Baseball rules prohibit club staff from using hand signals to communicate pitch types or speeds to players.
Cashman said there was a simple explanation: The Yankee Stadium scoreboard was on the fritz, so Weber was just providing the sort of post-pitch details that normally appear for all to see, such as “93 mph fastball.”
“The scoreboard went down. He was relaying after the fact with his fingers to some hitters who wanted it what the velocity was, pitches to the opposing teams’ hitter, to the guy on deck,” Cashman said. “There’s nothing to hide. We’ve got nothing to hide.”
Cashman said Weber wears headphones during home games so he can communicate with the scoreboard operator, relaying pitch information that can be displayed in center field for the fans’ enjoyment.
Cashman said Joe Garagiola Jr., baseball’s new disciplinarian, spoke Saturday morning with Yankees vice president and assistant general manager Jean Afterman about the issue. Cashman said there was no mention of any potential punishment and he thought Garagiola was satisfied with the team’s explanation.
“I think he recognizes the fact that there’s no real advantage here. But at the same time there is a bulletin out that says you’re not supposed to do that. We explained to him that the first inning the scoreboard was reading 912 mph, so normally that stuff’s out there,” Cashman said. “I think it’s really silly, personally. But we provided all information in a truthful and honest way to Joe.”
Cashman said he thinks Garagiola plans to review the policy next week with former Yankees manager Joe Torre, now MLB’s executive vice president for baseball operations.
In the meantime, the Yankees will put a stop to those hand signals from the stands.
“We’re not going to do it until they resolve what they want,” Cashman said.
Regardless, the GM was surprised by all the “blogosphere” buzz on Friday.
“It’s probably more work talking about than it’s worth,” Cashman said. “The psychotics that obsessed about it all day yesterday, I think we all did ‘em a favor by keeping them off the street and preventing them from hurting others.”
